One of the best games I’ve ever played. It easily satisfies the desire to build a base/colony. It has surprisingly deep simulation despite the simplistic art style, which is where the comparison to Dwarf Fortress comes in. Colonist relationships, simulation of every organ and limb allowing for detailed wounds and battle damage and dedicated AI storytellers driving the events that unfold are just a few examples of this deep simulation. The stories this game generates from nothing are the kind that you are excited to tell your friends about, laughing hysterically as you do. When the difficulty ramps up you will find yourself shouting in frustration one moment and smiling the next.

If that is not enough this game has a massive modding scene, which I’m proudly a part of, and thanks to having access to the source code anything is possible through modding in this game. This purchase is a no brainer for anyone that enjoys creating a mod list with over a hundred mods. If modding interests you, and you haven’t bought this already, this game is a perfect foundation to create your own mods, not unlike Minecraft or Factorio.

The developer, Tynan, is a personal inspiration and role model of mine and this game, and it’s development cycle, stand as a perfect example of how to create a game. It’s on par with Terraria and Factorio as an example of how to develop a successful Indie title.

This game is pretty decent but you need to approach it with a certain frame of mind. It isn’t entirely a colony simulator game, it’s a game where you try to survive while a ‘story teller’ (more like a raid creator) tries to kill you. The more rich your colony becomes and the more members your colony has in it, the more difficult the raids get.

This makes logical sense. No one is going to send a ton of well armed guys to raid a colony that’s impoverished. But there are some aspects of gameplay that I really dislike, this is a personal dislike and I am only speaking for myself and that’s drop pod raids. Nothing quite beats all 6 of my colonists out in the garden harvesting plants and planting new crops then suddenly right on top of EVERYONE, several mechanoids drop and before I can even click my mouse, 3-4 colonists are already dead or dying. And forget about trying to run away, you get slowed down massively every time you take damage, you are literally just screwed.

Some people enjoy that, I don’t. But this game’s modding community and scenario editor combine to give you near infinite customization on how you want to enjoy the game and once you finally figure out how you want to play the game and you get it setup to your liking, it is an absolute blast.

So give this game a try. Play it how you want to play it and you’ll find near infinite possibilities of enjoyment!.
