A giraffe is probably the most recognizable african animal. For some reason, it’s not in the vanilla base game, and your african tribe immersion is forever ruined. Crocodiles can never hunt you around the river bank, hippopotami can’t rip your arms off with a single bite and you can’t hear coyotes around the campfires. Except, now you can.

Vanilla Animals Expanded is a modular mod. It means it will come out in several modules allowing people to subscribe to only the animals they want in the game. This part is the Arid Shrubland biome expansion. It adds 7 new animals that will spawn in the Arid Shrubland, but some of them also spawn in other biomes. They have vanilla artwork, sounds and balancing. With this variant you are finally able to hunt herds of wildebeests, run away from cheetahs and use zebras as your pack animals!

There shouldn’t be any incompatibilities or issues, but in case anything pops up, report issues in the comments.

Q: Do the animals spawn randomly in biomes?
A: Yes, all these animals are guaranteed to spawn in Arid Shrubland biome, with some of them also spawning in other biomes. IMPORTANT: Hippopotamus and Crocodile will only spawn on river tiles.

Q: Is Wildebeest milkable?
A: Yes, however it produces milk in small quantities and very rarily.

Q: Is X a pack animal?
A: Zebra and Wildebeest are pack animals.

A: Absolutely, leave a comment down below!

Q: Will you keep updating the mod with new animals?
A: No. I will focus on other modules, adding different animals for different biomes, but this workshop submission is completed.

Q: Is this mod compatibile with A Dog Said?
A: Yes. You need A Dog Said and LBE’s A Dog Said Easy Patcher loaded before this mod.

Q: Why is your mod special?
A: I am a vanilla player. Anything that doesn’t suit vanilla game makes me cringe and I stay away from it. I did however find the game lacking after some time, therefore I’ve created these animals to be as accurate and as close to vanilla graphics style as possible. What is special? The best part is – nothing in this mod is special at all. Nothing will make you go ‘Oh that’s unusual’, because the whole purpose of this mod is to blend into the existing game.

Q: Is this mod save game compatible?
A: Yes, you can add it and remove it whenever you like.

Q: Can you add /this/ animal?
A: Chances are it’s probably already in the works as part of another biome. Please, stay vigilant and be patient. I’m just a human.

  • Request : Change the body size and mass on Cheetahs to more plausible numbers so they stop hunting colonists — cheetah body size is currently 1.4, which results in them attacking people before they’ll attack (say) a Zebra (with size 2.0). I can understand Lions at 1.65; a pack of hungry lions is a menace. But real cheetahs weigh between 20 and 65 kg (44 and 143 lb) not the outrageous 98 kg as in the mod. Also, in reality, cheetahs are considered to be about as tame as housecats and have been used as hunting partners since ancient times [en.wikipedia.org], though I don’t necessarily think that merits changing their wildness if you can’t also considerably lower their spawn frequency. (Lowering it to 40% might be nice, but they’d be awfully good defenders at that point.)Basically, in summary, hungry cheetahs are constantly hunting colonists and must be put down, which makes me sad.
  • If we are allowed to make suggestions, then how about a ‘Island Animal’ pack. This is one that has them all from islands, kinda obvious but you know. With these ones being the ones I thought would be cool to ad some more flavor to the Rim. So I would suggest Komodo dragons (who has a toxic and infectious bite, can only be trained up to be released), Giant Tortoises (probably the Aldabra one because it’s my favorite), Red Kangaroos (Australia is just a big island, and Kangaroos are mean strong jerks like how the Emus are ingame so it would be fun to have another jerk animal), Kiwis and/or Kakapos (we have a lack of birds, especially derpy cute ones), and finally Lemurs (because why not). If we also consider how the Megasloth got revived in Rimworld lore we could add the Thylacine as another animal, or the Dodo for laughs. So if you think any of these are something you want to add or are going to anyway, go ahead, I’m sure you’d knock it out of the park like the other ones.
  • I second more lizards, particularly serpents, skinks, geckos maybe? The smaller ones mostly for emergency eating, or as prey animals for smaller predators. I know my mother’s cats used to catch and eat every frog, snake, or anole they could catch. And some of them might even have neat qualities. A horned lizard blinding a colonist with a spray of blood would be a pretty funny moment.More than anything, I’d like to see a lion, or a panther. Beautiful cats, even if they don’t do much different than existing predatory cats. Lions at least could be pack hunters. Oh! And scorpions! It’s kind of weird that there aren’t any insects besides the alien ones. Poisonous scorpions and wasps and things could be neat little dangers. And if I could unleash an army of the things on my attackers, that would be extra cool.
